About Transnet South Africa
Transnet South Africa is the country’s state-owned freight logistics company, responsible for managing South Africa’s rail, port and pipeline infrastructure. Its mandate is to provide an efficient, reliable and cost-effective freight transport system that supports economic growth, trade and the movement of goods across the country. Transnet is wholly owned by the South African government and is one of the most important players in the national logistics chain.
The company operates through several divisions, including Transnet Freight Rail, Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager, Transnet Engineering, Transnet National Ports Authority, Transnet Port Terminals, Transnet Pipelines and Transnet Property. Transnet Freight Rail is Africa’s largest freight rail operator and manages a rail network of about 30,400 kilometres, transporting commodities such as coal, iron ore, manganese, grain, containers and general freight.
Transnet’s port operations are equally important to South Africa’s economy. The Transnet National Ports Authority manages the country’s commercial ports, including Durban, Cape Town, Richards Bay, Ngqura, Port Elizabeth, East London, Mossel Bay and Saldanha Bay. Transnet Port Terminals handles cargo such as containers, vehicles, minerals, agricultural products and break-bulk goods, while Transnet Pipelines transports petroleum and gas products through high-pressure pipelines.
Transnet also plays a major role in employment and skills development. Career opportunities include train drivers, artisans, engineers, technicians, port workers, marine pilots, security officers, logistics specialists, finance professionals, IT specialists and management roles. The company also offers learnerships, apprenticeships, internships and graduate programmes, making it an important employer in South Africa’s transport and logistics sector.
Transnet continues to invest in improving its infrastructure, equipment and operational performance. In 2026, Transnet Engineering signed a long-term material and technical support agreement worth about R6.6 billion with Wabtec to strengthen the performance of its locomotive fleet. This forms part of broader efforts to improve rail reliability, increase freight volumes and support South Africa’s economic recovery.
About Apprenticeships at Transnet: Welding, Boilermaker, Millwright, Mechanical, Fitter& Turner, Electrical
Transnet offers apprenticeships for young South Africans who want to build careers in technical trades such as welding, boilermaking, millwrighting, mechanical fitting, fitting and turning, and electrical work. These programmes combine classroom learning with practical, on-the-job training under the supervision of qualified artisans. Transnet’s apprenticeship programme covers 14 trades, and its official engineering and pipelines faculty lists electrician, fitter and turner, millwright, welder and boilermaker among the available trades.
A Welder apprenticeship trains learners to join metals using different welding processes and equipment. Welders are needed in rail maintenance, ship repair, pipelines, manufacturing and infrastructure projects. A Boilermaker apprenticeship focuses on cutting, shaping, assembling and repairing metal structures such as tanks, pipes, plates and heavy equipment. Boilermakers play an important role in Transnet’s rail workshops, ports and engineering operations.
A Millwright apprenticeship prepares learners to install, maintain and repair industrial machinery, including engines, pumps, conveyors, gearboxes and mechanical systems. Millwrights need both mechanical and electrical knowledge, which makes the trade valuable in industries that rely on complex equipment. A Mechanical Fitter apprenticeship focuses on assembling, maintaining and repairing mechanical components and machinery. Mechanical fitters work with tools, bearings, valves, pipes, engines and other equipment used in rail, port and pipeline operations.
The Fitter and Turner apprenticeship teaches learners how to manufacture, repair and maintain precision metal components. Fitters and turners use lathes, milling machines, grinders and hand tools to produce parts that must fit accurately within machines and equipment. This trade is important for keeping locomotives, wagons, machinery and other technical systems in good working condition. Transnet’s official training faculty lists Turner Machinists among its artisan development trades.
An Electrical apprenticeship trains learners to install, test, maintain and repair electrical systems and equipment. Electrical apprentices may work with wiring, motors, switchgear, control panels, lighting systems and high-voltage equipment. Transnet’s trades include Electrician and Electrical Fitter, and its training programmes also cover areas such as high-voltage switching and plant maintenance.
To qualify for a Transnet apprenticeship, applicants generally need a relevant technical qualification, such as an N2 to N6 certificate with trade theory, engineering science and mathematics, or an NCV Level 4 qualification with relevant vocational subjects. Some advertisements also accept technical matric with mathematics and physical science. Applicants must be South African citizens and should prepare a CV, certified ID copy, academic record and proof of qualifications before applying.
Transnet’s apprenticeships can lead to a National Trade Test and a Red Seal artisan qualification, which is highly valued in South Africa’s engineering and manufacturing sectors. After qualifying, artisans can find work in rail, ports, mining, manufacturing, construction, energy, transport and maintenance. For young people interested in practical, hands-on careers, a Transnet apprenticeship offers a structured route from learning to earning while developing skills that are in demand across the country.
