About BMW South Africa
BMW South Africa is the South African arm of BMW Group, a global manufacturer of premium vehicles, motorcycles and mobility services. The company has been part of South Africa’s automotive industry for more than 50 years and is best known locally for its Rosslyn manufacturing plant near Pretoria, which was BMW’s first production facility outside Germany.
BMW’s South African operations began in 1968, when Praetor Monteerders assembled vehicles using BMW engines and drivetrains. In 1973, BMW acquired full ownership and established BMW Group South Africa (Pty) Ltd, making Plant Rosslyn the company’s first manufacturing site outside Germany. Since then, the plant has produced more than 1.6 million vehicles, including several generations of the BMW 3 Series and the BMW X3.
Plant Rosslyn is a major export hub for BMW. It produced the BMW 3 Series for 35 years before switching to the BMW X3 in 2018, and more than 400,000 X3s have since been built there. The plant exports the majority of its vehicles to markets in Europe, Africa and beyond, making BMW one of South Africa’s leading exporters of premium vehicles and components.
BMW South Africa is also investing in the future of mobility. In 2023, the company announced a R4.2 billion investment to electrify Plant Rosslyn and transform it into a BMW iFACTORY, supporting production of the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid. More than 300 employees have received specialised training for electrified-vehicle production, reflecting BMW’s shift toward sustainable manufacturing and electric mobility.
Career opportunities at BMW South Africa include roles in vehicle manufacturing, engineering, quality assurance, logistics, supply chain, sales, marketing, finance, information technology, customer service and after-sales support. The company’s Midrand campus serves as its national headquarters, while Plant Rosslyn employs thousands of people and supports a much larger network of dealers and suppliers. BMW South Africa also invests heavily in skills development through its Training Academy, which can host 300 apprentices each year.
