About Eskom South Africa
Eskom South Africa is the country’s national electricity utility, officially known as Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. It is a state-owned company wholly owned by the South African government and operates across the full electricity value chain: generation, transmission, distribution, purchasing and selling electricity. Eskom supplies homes, businesses, mines, farms, municipalities and other customers across South Africa and also participates in electricity trading in the Southern African Development Community.
Eskom was established on 1 March 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission, known as ESCOM or EVKOM. It was renamed Eskom in 1987 and converted into a public company with share capital under the Eskom Conversion Act in 2002. Over more than a century, Eskom has played a central role in electrifying South Africa, helping expand household access to electricity from a small minority of homes to around 90% today.
The utility operates a large generation fleet of 30 power stations with a combined nominal capacity of about 47 GW. Its power stations use coal, nuclear fuel, diesel, water and wind, with coal-fired stations forming the largest part of the fleet. Eskom also owns and operates Koeberg, Africa’s only nuclear power station, as well as hydroelectric, pumped-storage and renewable-energy facilities.
Eskom’s transmission network spans roughly 33,328 kilometres and balances electricity supply and demand in real time to maintain the national grid at 50 Hz. The company distributes electricity through an extensive national network and supplies more than 86% of South Africa’s electricity needs, while also purchasing power from independent power producers. This makes Eskom critical to the country’s economy, public services and everyday life.
Career opportunities at Eskom include roles in power-plant operations, engineering, maintenance, transmission, distribution, project management, finance, human resources, information technology, safety and environmental management. The utility also offers apprenticeships, learnerships, internships and graduate programmes for young South Africans interested in energy, engineering and technical careers. Eskom’s work in generation, grid maintenance and electrification makes it one of the most important employers and infrastructure providers in South Africa.
