About Rand Water

Rand Water is South Africa’s largest bulk water utility and one of the largest in the world. Established in 1903 as the Rand Water Board, the organisation supplies bulk potable water to Gauteng and parts of Mpumalanga, the Free State and North West. Its head office is in Glenvista, Johannesburg, and it serves more than 18 million people across an area of about 18,000 square kilometres.

Rand Water does not supply water directly to households. Instead, it treats and supplies bulk water to metropolitan and local municipalities, mines, industries and other large customers. These customers then distribute the water to homes, businesses and communities within their areas. Rand Water’s network includes about 3,500 kilometres of large-diameter pipelines, 60 service reservoirs and several major pumping and purification stations.

The utility sources most of its water from the Vaal Dam, with additional supply supported by the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Water is treated at the Vereeniging and Zuikerbosch purification stations before being pumped through the network to reservoirs and customers. Rand Water is known for producing high-quality drinking water that meets South African and international standards.

Rand Water also plays an important role in water conservation, infrastructure maintenance and public awareness. The utility regularly warns communities about high water demand, leaks and reservoir levels, encouraging residents to report leaks and use water responsibly. It also works with municipalities to manage supply challenges, especially during periods of high demand or drought.

Career opportunities at Rand Water include engineering, water treatment, operations, maintenance, plumbing, project management, environmental management, finance, human resources, information technology, legal services and customer care. The organisation also offers bursaries, internships and learnerships for young South Africans interested in careers in water and sanitation.
