About TotalEnergies Renewables Southern Africa

TotalEnergies Renewables Southern Africa (TERSA) is the renewable-energy arm of TotalEnergies in Southern Africa, focused on developing, building and operating solar, wind and battery-storage projects. The company is part of TotalEnergies’ global strategy to expand clean-energy capacity and support the transition to a lower-carbon economy. In South Africa, TERSA is developing a portfolio of renewable-energy projects with a combined capacity of about 700 MW.

One of the company’s most significant projects is the Hydra Storage project in the Northern Cape. It combines a 216 MW solar photovoltaic plant with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system, making it the largest hybrid renewable-energy project in Africa. The project supplies 75 MW of dispatchable renewable electricity to the national grid between 05:00 and 21:30, delivering more than 400 GWh of electricity per year, enough to power approximately 200,000 South African households.

TERSA is also developing the SAL PV and Wind project, which includes a 120 MW solar plant and a 140 MW wind farm in the Northern Cape. These projects are expected to generate around 910 GWh of electricity per year and will supply renewable power to Sasol and Air Liquide under long-term corporate power purchase agreements. The projects support the decarbonisation of Sasol’s Secunda operations and Air Liquide’s industrial activities.

The company also offers solar solutions for commercial and industrial customers. These solutions include site assessment, system design, financing, installation, commissioning, maintenance and performance monitoring. Businesses can use solar panels to reduce electricity costs, improve energy security and lower their carbon footprint.

TotalEnergies Renewables Southern Africa creates employment and career opportunities in areas such as renewable-energy engineering, project development, construction, operations and maintenance, asset management, health and safety, environmental management, finance, contracts and stakeholder engagement. The company’s projects also support local communities, skills development and South Africa’s broader Just Energy Transition.
