About Municipal Councillors Pension Fund (MCPF) South Africa
The Municipal Councillors Pension Fund (MCPF) is a defined-contribution retirement fund established specifically for councillors serving in South African municipalities. It was established on 1 May 1988 in terms of the Pension Benefits for Councillors of Local Authorities Act 105 of 1987. The fund’s purpose is to help eligible municipal councillors build retirement savings and provide financial protection for members and their beneficiaries.
As a defined-contribution fund, the value of a member’s retirement benefit depends on contributions paid into the fund, investment performance and the length of time the member remains invested. The MCPF provides benefits that may include retirement benefits, death benefits and funeral cover. Members receive annual benefit statements and may request benefit quotations to monitor their accumulated savings and understand their projected benefits.
The fund also offers additional services, including access to housing loans through Standard Bank, subject to the relevant rules and credit requirements. Retirement options depend on factors such as the member’s age and fund value; under the fund’s information, members may generally take part of the benefit as a lump sum, while the balance may need to be used to provide an ongoing pension. Municipal councillors should consult the MCPF directly or obtain professional financial advice before making decisions about retirement, withdrawals, housing loans or beneficiary nominations.
