About EThekwini Municipality

eThekwini Municipality is the metropolitan government responsible for managing Durban and surrounding communities in KwaZulu-Natal. It is the only Category A metropolitan municipality in the province and one of South Africa’s major coastal metropolitan municipalities. The municipality oversees a large and diverse urban area that includes Durban, townships, suburbs, rural communities, industrial zones, and important tourism and port areas.

The municipality is responsible for delivering essential services such as water, electricity, sanitation, refuse removal, roads, public facilities, housing support, community safety, libraries, parks, and recreational services. It also manages municipal planning, local economic development, environmental programmes, and public infrastructure. Its council approves municipal plans, budgets, and programmes while representing the needs of local communities. Residents can also access several services online, including account payments, meter readings, consumption information, and complaints or compliments.

eThekwini plays an important role in KwaZulu-Natal’s economy because Durban is a major centre for trade, tourism, manufacturing, logistics, and investment. The municipality’s current priorities include improving service delivery, renewing ageing infrastructure, strengthening water, sanitation, and energy systems, improving public safety, and creating conditions for economic growth and job creation. Through its long-term planning and integrated development programmes, eThekwini aims to become a more caring, liveable, inclusive, and economically vibrant city.
