About Eskom South Africa
Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd is South Africa’s national electricity utility and a state-owned company responsible for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity across the country. It also purchases power from independent power producers and participates in regional electricity trading within the Southern African Development Community. Eskom has been supplying electricity to South Africa since the Electricity Supply Commission was established in 1923.
The utility operates across the full electricity value chain. Its generation division produces electricity from a mix of coal-fired, nuclear, hydroelectric, pumped-storage, wind, and diesel power stations. Transmission moves electricity across a national high-voltage network, while distribution delivers power to municipalities, businesses, industries, and households. Eskom reports that it operates 30 power stations with total nominal generating capacity of approximately 47 GW and a transmission network of about 33,328 kilometres.
Eskom plays a central role in South Africa’s economic and social development because reliable electricity is essential for homes, schools, hospitals, mines, factories, businesses, and public services. The company has been working to improve plant performance, strengthen the grid, reduce its financial and operational pressures, and support the country’s transition towards cleaner energy. In 2026, Eskom also received approval to establish Eskom Green as a wholly owned renewable-energy subsidiary intended to help accelerate renewable-energy availability and decarbonise the grid.
