About Rand Water

Rand Water is the largest bulk water utility in Africa and one of the largest in the world. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, it delivers roughly 4.5 billion liters of potable water daily. It supplies safe drinking water to over 11 million people across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State, and North West.

Core Operations & Infrastructure

  • The Mandate: It draws and purifies raw water, then sells the bulk potable water to metropolitan and local municipalities, mines, and large industries. The respective municipalities are then responsible for distributing it to individual households.
  • The Network: Rand Water’s sprawling infrastructure includes large purification stations, pumping and booster stations, and a multi-billion Rand regional pipeline network spanning approximately 3,500 km.
  • Quality Control: Water is treated to meet and exceed the stringent South African National Drinking Water Standards (SANS 241) to ensure it remains safe as it travels through the bulk distribution network.
