About Department of Transport South Africa
The South African Department of Transport is the national government department responsible for developing, coordinating, and regulating the country’s transport system. Its mandate covers public transport, road transport, rail, civil aviation, maritime transport, airports, harbours, pipelines, and freight operations. The department develops policies, prepares legislation, sets national standards, conducts research, and monitors the implementation of transport programmes across the country.
The department works to promote an integrated transport network that allows people and goods to move safely, efficiently, affordably, and reliably. Its responsibilities include supporting public transport systems, improving road safety, overseeing national road and rail infrastructure, regulating vehicle and driver licensing, and promoting safe and efficient air and maritime transport. It also works with public entities and other spheres of government to coordinate transport planning and development.
Transport is central to South Africa’s economic and social development because it connects communities to schools, hospitals, workplaces, markets, and essential services. Through its policies and programmes, the Department of Transport aims to reduce transport costs, improve mobility, address infrastructure backlogs, strengthen road safety, and support economic growth.
