About Eskom South Africa
Eskom South Africa is the country’s national electricity utility and one of the largest power companies in Africa. It is a state-owned company responsible for generating, transmitting and distributing electricity across South Africa. Eskom supplies electricity to households, businesses, mines, farms, municipalities and industrial customers, and it also purchases power from independent power producers.
Eskom was established in 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission, commonly known as ESCOM. It was created to provide a reliable and affordable electricity supply to support South Africa’s growing economy. Over the years, Eskom expanded its generation capacity and built a national power grid, becoming the country’s main electricity supplier.
The company operates a large network of power stations, including coal-fired, nuclear, hydroelectric, pumped-storage, wind and diesel plants. Its major coal-fired stations include Medupi, Kusile, Kendal, Majuba, Matimba and Lethabo, while Koeberg is its nuclear power station near Cape Town. Eskom’s transmission network covers approximately 33,000 kilometres and balances electricity supply and demand in real time to keep the national grid stable.
Eskom plays a critical role in South Africa’s economy and daily life. It supplies more than 80% of the electricity generated in the country and supports essential services such as hospitals, schools, water systems, transport, mining, manufacturing and telecommunications. The utility also provides electricity to municipalities, which then distribute it to homes and businesses in their areas.
In recent years, Eskom has faced challenges such as ageing infrastructure, maintenance backlogs, coal-supply issues, financial pressure and load shedding. The company has been working to improve plant performance, reduce unplanned outages and strengthen grid reliability. Eskom’s Generation Recovery Plan has focused on returning units to service, improving maintenance and increasing available generation capacity.
Eskom is also expanding its renewable-energy portfolio. The company has started building a 75 MW solar plant at Lethabo Power Station in the Free State, which is expected to generate about 147 GWh of electricity per year. This project forms part of Eskom’s broader plan to develop renewable energy and battery-storage projects at existing power-station sites, with a target of adding around 6 GW of new capacity by 2030.
Career opportunities at Eskom include engineering, artisan and technical trades, power-plant operations, transmission and distribution, IT, data analysis, finance, human resources, legal services, procurement, project management and environmental management. Eskom also offers bursaries, learnerships, internships and graduate programmes for young South Africans interested in building careers in the energy sector.
