About Sasol South Africa

Sasol South Africa is part of Sasol Limited, a global integrated chemicals and energy company with strong South African roots. The company was established in 1950 with the goal of creating energy independence and industrial capacity for South Africa. It began producing synthetic fuels and chemicals from coal at its Sasolburg complex in 1955, using its proprietary Fischer-Tropsch technology.

Today, Sasol is one of South Africa’s largest chemical producers and a major player in the country’s energy sector. Its South African operations include coal mining, gas supply, fuel production, chemical manufacturing and fuel retailing. The company’s main manufacturing facilities are located in Secunda and Sasolburg, where it produces approximately four million tons of products annually.

Sasol’s Energy business operates in mining, gas and fuels. The mining segment supplies coal for gasification, electricity and steam production, while the gas segment handles upstream feedstock, pipeline transport and sales of natural and methane-rich gas. The fuels segment produces and markets liquid fuels such as petrol, diesel, jet fuel, LPG and illuminating paraffin.

The company’s Chemicals business produces a wide range of products, including polymers, solvents, olefins, surfactants, waxes, ammonia, methanol, catalysts, carbon products and other specialty chemicals. These products are used in industries such as packaging, automotive, construction, agriculture, mining, cleaning, personal care and manufacturing.

Sasol is also investing in renewable energy and lower-carbon solutions. The company is expanding South Africa’s clean energy mix through renewable energy projects and is exploring opportunities in green hydrogen and other low-carbon technologies. Its sustainability strategy focuses on balancing energy security, industrial growth, environmental responsibility and social development.

Sasol is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange, and employs more than 30,000 people across 33 countries. In South Africa, it supports thousands of jobs directly and indirectly through mining, manufacturing, logistics, engineering, sales, procurement and community programmes. The company’s work in Sasolburg, Secunda and other areas makes it an important contributor to the national economy.
