About SANParks
South African National Parks, commonly known as SANParks, is the public conservation authority responsible for managing a network of national parks and protected areas across the country. Its mandate is to conserve, protect, control, and manage South Africa’s biodiversity, landscapes, and cultural heritage in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act. SANParks manages parks that represent the country’s varied ecosystems, from bushveld and grasslands to coastal, desert, and marine environments.
SANParks manages 21 national parks, including the world-famous Kruger National Park, Addo Elephant National Park, Table Mountain National Park, and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. These parks protect a wide range of wildlife, plants, ecosystems, archaeological sites, and cultural resources. The organisation also conducts conservation research, protects endangered species, manages ecological infrastructure, and works with communities to promote inclusive conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
Tourism is an important part of SANParks’ work because visitors help generate income that supports conservation and park operations. The organisation provides accommodation, game drives, guided activities, camping facilities, educational experiences, and access to nature-based tourism destinations. Its parks also contribute to local economic development by creating employment and supporting businesses in rural areas. Through conservation, tourism, education, and community partnerships, SANParks helps protect South Africa’s natural heritage for current and future generations.
