The company was founded in 1960 as Rainbow Chicken Limited and changed its name to RCL Foods Limited in 2013. Its head office is in Westville, Durban, and the company operates across South Africa, Eswatini, Namibia, Botswana and Uganda.

The company’s portfolio includes well-known South African brands such as Yum Yum peanut butter, Nola mayonnaise, Ouma rusks, Pieman’s pies, Number 1 Mageu, Sunbake and Sunshine bread, Supreme flour, Selati sugar, Monati porridge, Bobtail dog food and Catmor cat food. However, the company unbundled Rainbow on 1 July 2024 and disposed of Vector Logistics during the 2024 financial year, allowing it to focus more closely on its remaining groceries, baking, sugar and shared-services businesses. Its operations support careers in food production, engineering, quality assurance, supply chain, logistics, sales, marketing, finance, agriculture and research. The company also emphasises sustainability, responsible sourcing and community wellbeing, with a purpose of growing what matters for consumers, employees and the wider society.
