About SANParks

SANParks, or South African National Parks, is the public entity responsible for managing South Africa’s national parks and protecting the country’s biodiversity, landscapes and cultural heritage. It operates under the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and is guided by the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act 57 of 2003. Its mandate includes conserving wildlife, protecting natural ecosystems, preserving heritage sites and promoting responsible nature-based tourism .

SANParks manages a network of national parks across South Africa, including the world-famous Kruger National Park, Table Mountain National Park, Addo Elephant National Park, Garden Route National Park, Augrabies Falls National Park, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and many others. Its protected areas cover more than four million hectares of land and include marine protected areas, making SANParks one of the country’s most important conservation organisations. These parks protect diverse habitats such as savanna, fynbos, desert, forest, grassland and coastal ecosystems.

The organisation’s history dates back more than a century. The Sabie Game Reserve, established in 1898, later became part of the Kruger National Park when the National Parks Board was formed in 1926. Today, SANParks has developed from a conservation-focused body into a leading ecotourism organisation that welcomes millions of visitors each year. Tourism income helps fund conservation work, while park visits allow South Africans and international tourists to experience wildlife, hiking, camping, birdwatching, photography and cultural heritage .

SANParks also plays an important role in community development and environmental education. Its work includes anti-poaching efforts, habitat restoration, research, water-resource protection, marine conservation and partnerships with communities living near parks. The organisation aims to ensure that conservation benefits both people and nature, while creating employment opportunities in areas such as field ranger services, tourism, hospitality, maintenance, research, environmental education, administration and law enforcement.
