About The South African Revenue Service (SARS)

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is the national institution responsible for collecting taxes and administering customs in South Africa. Established under the South African Revenue Service Act of 1997, SARS works to ensure that individuals, businesses, and other taxpayers comply with the country’s tax laws. The revenue collected helps fund public services such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social development.

SARS administers several tax types, including personal income tax, company tax, value-added tax, pay-as-you-earn tax, and customs and excise duties. Its services include taxpayer registration, tax returns, payments, refunds, verification, audits, debt management, tax-compliance status, and dispute resolution. Through digital platforms such as eFiling, taxpayers can complete many tax-related activities without visiting a branch.

In addition to collecting revenue, SARS Customs helps facilitate legitimate international trade, protect South Africa’s borders, and prevent the movement of prohibited or illegally traded goods. It processes customs declarations, manages import and export requirements, and administers customs duties and related registrations. Through its tax and customs responsibilities, SARS plays an important role in supporting government finances, promoting compliance, and contributing to a stable and prosperous South African economy.
