About Avbob South Africa

AVBOB South Africa is a mutual assurance society that provides funeral insurance, funeral services and related products to South African families. Founded in 1918 during the Spanish flu pandemic, the organisation began as a provident fund to help members cover funeral expenses and support their next of kin. Today, AVBOB is recognised as Africa’s largest mutual assurance society, with its head office in Pretoria and a nationwide presence through branches, agencies and insurance offices.

The AVBOB Group consists of three main businesses: AVBOB Mutual Assurance Society, AVBOB Funeral Service and AVBOB Industries. AVBOB Mutual Assurance Society provides funeral cover and insurance products, while AVBOB Funeral Service arranges funerals for policyholders and private clients. AVBOB Industries manufactures coffins, caskets and funeralware, allowing the group to offer a complete funeral and burial solution.

AVBOB’s funeral products include Cashback Funeral Cover, Extended Family Funeral Cover, pensioner plans, life insurance and group-scheme funeral cover. Its group scheme is available to employers, unions, churches, clubs, burial societies and stokvels, with cover options for spouses, children, parents, parents-in-law and extended family members. Customers should always check the policy terms, waiting periods, exclusions, benefit limits and claim requirements before taking out cover.

As a mutual society, AVBOB does not have external shareholders. Instead, it shares value with its members through benefits such as free funeral benefits, cash-back rewards after claim-free periods and other member-focused advantages. AVBOB also supports communities through education, disaster relief and other corporate social investment initiatives, while employing thousands of people across funeral services, insurance, manufacturing, sales, administration and support functions.
